From Taiwan
In my series "From Taiwan," which focuses on the daily lives of people from a foreigner's perspective, I noticed many cultural norms well-integrated into their society, which evoked a feeling of longing in me. Growing up in China, I witnessed and experienced many of these customs, but they were quickly forsaken after moving to the US at the age of 7. The trip was significant as I had the opportunity to connect with memories from my younger self and reflect on the privilege of being a part of another culture.
Many practices felt nostalgic, like hanging clothes outside my balcony, hearing a swarm of mopeds passing by, and eating Chinese doughnuts dipped in soy milk before going to school. I wanted to capture the ordinary things I once overlooked but now wished to be stored in a special place in my heart.
